CHAPTER 4

BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE

Batman hurled the unlit torches at the Joker fast, one after another. ZIP! ZIP! ZIP!

Without hesitation, the Joker caught all three in the air and juggled them effortlessly. “Of course I can juggle,” he said. “What kind of jester would I be if I couldn’t?” After a few seconds of keeping the unlit torches in the air, he threw them back at Batman, much harder now.

Batman caught them and whipped them back at the Joker. Both Batman and the Joker hurled the unlit torches as hard as they could, aiming for one another’s heads. The juggling contest may have looked harmless, but it was really a vicious battle. The bases of the torches were heavy and could do real damage. They flew so fast they were blurred missiles in the air.

“Let’s make this more fun!” cried the Joker. As the torches passed through his hands, he lit them on fire with a lighter.

He and Batman now assaulted one another with burning batons. FWOOSH! FWOOSH! FWOOSH! The juggling battle had gone from dangerous to deadly. But even at that high speed, with the fiery torches, they were both so evenly matched at juggling that neither was ever going to hit the other.
